Use the calculator above to estimate how much to feed your dog or cat each day. It is based on the standard veterinary energy formula and your pet's weight, life stage, and activity level — more precise than a generic feeding chart on the bag.
First we estimate the Resting Energy Requirement (RER) from body weight: RER = 70 x (weight in kg)^0.75. Then we multiply by a factor for life stage and activity to get the daily Maintenance Energy Requirement (MER) in kilocalories.
Foods differ in energy density. If you enter the kcal per 100 g printed on your food's label, the calculator converts the daily calories into grams of that specific food.
It gives a sensible starting estimate. Individual needs vary with metabolism, health, and breed, so monitor body condition and adjust with your vet.
Growing animals need more energy per kg. Choose the puppy/kitten option, and re-check often as they grow.
It is on the food packaging, often labelled metabolizable energy. Leave it blank to see calories only.
